Rice cereal alternatives?

Our son is 6 months old and has always been in the top for his height and bottom for his weight. At his last check up he was 97% for height and 19% for weight. Well his doctor wants us to put him on rice cereal to help him gain weight. I don't want to give him empty foods that have no nutritional value. The doctor insists I need to focus on giving him calories and not worry so much about nutrients. I told him no and he didn't keep pushing, but I am still looking for legitimate research regarding rice cereal for babies first food. If I do start him on food now what were the first foods you gave your baby and when? Any other idea weight gain? He is a very active and healthy baby! Sits up, scoots around, has 2 teeth, laughs, smiles and sleeps great! I was not worried about him at all!!! But his doctor is starting to get me a little worried about his weight! TIA!!

We started solids right at 6 months old. We skipped the cereal this time around as my little one has a dairy allergy and there fore has a very sensitive stomach. His first foods were applesauce and avocado and then we moved on to pears, bananas, sweet potatoes and carrots!

Our first foods were avocado and mashed banana. I don't think there are hard or fast rules about first foods. My older kids started with rice cereal and had no problems, with my younger kids we skipped the cereal. There is no real difference in their health or eating habits now (the older two are teens 17 and 15) and the youngers are 11,9 and 4. Nutritionally, baby is getting all he needs from you, so in s sense, your doctor is right. At this point the calories count. I like avocado because of all of the healthy fats for brain development and it is pretty much ready to eat for baby.
