Starting Formula Per the Doc

My EBF son will be 7 months old next week. He weighs not quite 15 lbs. and only gained .3 oz in one month and didn't grow much in height or head circ either. The doc wants us to start him on formula asap because she doesn't think he's getting enough calories from my milk. I wonder if my supply is not keeping up. Either way it makes me sad. She's at least letting me still BF him but then to supplement with the formula. I don't know why but I am nervous about giving him formula. I really wanted to EBF him for a year. We do give him avocado once a day also. Any other mommas have to switch from breast to formula or supplement? How did you feel about it and how did your baby do?

Oh Mama, this is so hard. . . but, you need to look at the health of your baby. While it may seem great to say "ta-da! I breastfed exclusively for a year, no formula", the fact is, sometimes (not always) breastmilk just is not enough. Since you can still nurse, you are simply complimentary feeding with formula. Your doctor is trying to rule things out. IF baby gains while on formula, then his slow growth may be related to your milk supply. If, with formula, he still grows slowly, then there may be some deeper underlying causes and more testing may need to be done. It is a good sign that your doc is not just jumping to that step and is trying other options. Continue breastfeeding, compliment with formula, and love up your baby. I have a senior in high school this year. If you line him and his friends up, you can't tell who was breastfed and who was formula fed, but you can tell that they all have moms who love them! Hang in there! This is the first of many parenting speedbumps you will hit!
